Date: Friday, 15th August*
Location: Msasa, Harare*
On Friday the 15th, PJM Response’s control room received a panic signal from a commercial premises in Msasa. Within minutes, our rapid response team was dispatched to the scene—only to discover an active invasion underway by at least six armed intruders.
What Happened
Despite the premises being equipped with above-average security—including a PJM Response panic button, CCTV surveillance, a full perimeter electric fence, and reinforced access gates—the intruders managed to breach the property. Their point of entry? A panel wall, bypassing the usual access points.
The internal security guard, upon spotting the intruders on the CCTV monitor, activated the panic button and escaped through the guard room window. While this may seem dramatic, it likely saved his life.
Three PJM Response vehicles were deployed:
• The first arrived within minutes but couldn’t gain access.
• The second was dispatched to collect the police.
• The third, an armed response unit, arrived shortly after.
By the time our teams secured the perimeter, the intruders had fled, having vandalized several administrative offices in search of a safe—which, fortunately, they did not access.
Police Response
Though there was a delay in arrival, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) ultimately deployed a well-coordinated and professional team. PJM Response commends their efforts and teamwork in handling the aftermath.
Lessons Learned
This incident underscores several critical insights for businesses:
1. Electronic security alone is not enough. Physical barriers and human vigilance remain essential.
2. Rapid response is a powerful deterrent. The speed of PJM’s arrival likely prevented further damage or loss.
3. CCTV is not a deterrent—it’s a detection tool. Cameras help monitor and record, but they don’t stop intruders.
4. Remote CCTV monitoring by PJM Response enhances security. Early detection can trigger faster intervention before intruders gain access.
5.. Safes on-site are risky. We recommend using secure off-site storage facilities for valuables.
